My Story

I moved to England when I was 28 years old. Once I got there, I started noticing this word ‘Pilates’. It’s not very often that you see a word you’ve never seen before and don’t have the slightest clue what it means. I made a mental note to find out what it was next time I came across it (remembering here that this was pre smart phones!). I moved to a small village and in the high street (main street) was a physiotherapy clinic. It’s notice board outside listed Pilates as one of it’s services. I went directly in and asked what it was. The owner of the clinic explained it to me and I responded with ‘that sounds like very intelligent exercise’. I signed up on the spot!

After continuing my practice regularly, I was approached by the owner and was told that if I took my Pilates certification then he would guarantee me a job. I tucked this idea away but continued on with my regular job (office manager of a bespoke marketing design company). My company downsized and moved everyone into their London office. I took a redundancy offer as a great opportunity. With this, I decided to start my Pilates training and spent every day in London spending 6-8 hours a day in training; practising and observing for hours.

Finally, with my certificate in hand, I went back to the clinic and started teaching 2 weeks later. This was the beginning of my Pilates teaching career and at the time, I had no idea I’d still be doing it 20+ years on. Fast forward to today and my teaching has completely changed from when I started, my personal practice has completely changed and my depth of understanding of this brilliant system continues to grow even still.

I’ve retaken 2 different certifications since my original one and having started out as a contemporary teacher, I am now a proud, fully classical Pilates teacher. When I started, I didn’t even know there was a difference!
