Why Pilates doesn’t work for some…

I’m not going to lie. Classical Pilates is hard. But we all know that anything that worth it is worth working for and is much more rewarding in the end! From my 20+ years of experience working with hundreds of different bodies, I have noticed a few things and these things, in my opinion, hold people back from being successful at Pilates.
  1. Being closed-minded. 
    Those people who come to the studio and expect it to be easy are in for a surprise! However, if their first response is 'I can't' then chances are, they won't. I have found that those people who are willing to have a go and give things a try with an open mind are far more successful than those that aren't. Even if people think their body isn't capable of doing something, the way we work in the studio is that we will always find a way to do even a small portion of the movement and then build the confidence, strength or whatever is lacking to eventually build and grow the movement.
  2. Trauma
    Trauma is just that - trauma. And whether it's physical, emotional, mental or a combination, it can prohibit connections and act as a hug hurdle to becoming successful. We recognize this and have supports in our studio that will help with this. It does take trust in us which may or may not come right away. We will refer out to our trauma specialists IF we feel it will be received well. There is every chance that we hit too closely to something and that person leaves without hesitation and won't come back. 
  3. Timing
    Sometimes it's all about timing. If someone is not able to make themselves a priority, they won't be successful at Pilates. Whether it's committing to just once a week, or more, a commitment is just that! 
It takes time, patience and practice to put all the pieces together to make even small steps moving forward but as long as we are going forward, then we are successful.
